‘It’s really great to contribute for the team’: Dewald Brevis after leading MI Cape Town to a high-scoring victory in SA20
It was a run-fest on Friday night at a sold-out Centurion, where MI Cape Town secured a 27-run victory over Pretoria Capitals in a SA20 contest dominated by batters. However, the loss meant that the Capitals are now eliminated from playoff contention.

“I’m very grateful for it and we’re playing well as a team, so that’s the best and I can only thank God for it. But, yeah, it’s really great to contribute for the team. All the guys in the team are team players, so whatever we have to do, we’re doing it and we’re giving it our all,” Brevis said.
Brevis also spoke about his current form and mental approach to the game. “I’m really feeling excited. I’m enjoying it. I’m really enjoying the cricket. It’s just about playing with a smile, enjoying it, and focusing on a few things,” he said. “There was a phase where I listened to a lot of people and tried to be too clever, but now I just want to play my natural game and be Dewald Brevis.”
A crucial part of MI Cape Town’s innings was Brevis’ unbeaten 142-run partnership with Reeza Hendricks, who contributed 77* off 44 balls. Their calculated approach ensured MI Cape Town reached a formidable 222/3.
Speaking about their partnership, Brevis shared an interesting moment of tactical exchange. “I reckon there was a time our communication was gone. I think it’s the first time me and Razzle (Hendricks) were batting together, but there was a moment where I told him I might try sweeping, and he told me, ‘No, just focus on hitting it straight.’ It worked well. Near the end, when he hit that beautiful six, he told me he was thinking of lapping, and I told him, ‘No, let’s keep going straight.’ The bowler was under pressure, and it worked.”
With MI Cape Town advancing to the playoffs, Brevis acknowledged the importance of the upcoming matches. “I think it’s definitely the crucial part of the tournament now. Everyone has to contribute. Whether it’s fielding, batting, or bowling, we have to play well as a team and take it day by day, game by game.”
Meanwhile, Pretoria Capitals coach Jonathan Trott reflected on his team’s campaign and the missed opportunities. “We got ourselves into some really good positions early on and just weren’t able to maintain that for 20 overs. That’s one of the areas where we struggled,” Trott admitted. “We had moments and glimpses with the bat but never had massive partnerships consistently.”
On preparations for Season Four, Trott emphasised the need for the right squad composition. “Character plays a huge part in tournaments like these. Going forward, we need to get the right kind of players with both talent and temperament.”
Despite the Capitals’ exit, Trott praised the tournament’s success. “SA20 is a brilliant tournament. It has captured the imagination of South African sport, and you can see that with sold-out crowds. The challenge is to keep that momentum going forward.”
